Wheel Stop Sizes Explained: How to Choose the Right Dimensions?

Wheel stops are available in several lengths. The right wheel stop size helps drivers park in the correct position without hitting walls, blocking walkways or damaging nearby equipment.

If a wheel stop is too short, the tyres may not reach it properly. If it is too long, it may extend into a pedestrian area or take up too much space.

Before choosing wheel stops, check:

  • What types of vehicles use the car park?

  • How much space is available around the parking bay?

  • What dimensions and placement rules apply locally?

Wheel stops do not have universal standard dimensions. The right size depends on the parking layout and the vehicles that use it.

How Many Wheel Stops Are Needed per Parking Space?

A parking space can use one long wheel stop or two shorter wheel stops. The correct number depends on the vehicle type and model length.

Sino Concept recommends:

  • 550 mm wheel stops: Two per parking space.

  • 900 mm wheel stops: Two per parking space.

  • 1220 mm wheel stop: One per parking space.

  • 1650 mm wheel stop: One per parking space.

  • 1830 mm wheel stop: One per parking space.

For the 550 mm and 900 mm models, place one wheel stop in front of each tyre. Measure the wheel track first, then align the two wheel stops so that both tyres reach them at the same time.

The 1220 mm, 1650 mm and 1830 mm models use one wheel stop across the centre of the parking bay. This simple layout is easy for drivers to see and use. Keep the ends inside the bay so the wheel stop does not create a hazard in nearby pedestrian areas.

Match Wheel Stop Dimensions to Heavy-Duty Vehicle Type

The standard models above are suitable for most passenger-car parking spaces. However, length alone is not enough when the site is used by coaches, trucks or other heavy vehicles.

Larger vehicles have bigger tyres and exert more force when they contact a wheel stop. For these applications, choose a model designed for the vehicle type instead of simply using a longer passenger-car wheel stop.

Sino Concept offers vehicle-specific models:

  • Coach Wheel Stop: Designed for buses and other passenger transport vehicles. Its stable base withstands repeated contact in coach bays, bus parking lots and transport hubs.

  • HGV Wheel Stop: Designed for trucks, lorries and other heavy vehicles. Its reinforced structure provides a strong, stable stopping point in logistics centres, truck depots and loading bays.

Each of these heavy-duty wheel stop models requires two wheel stops per parking space. Before installation, check the vehicle wheel track, tyre size, parking bay width and project requirements.

Check Local Parking Standards Before Choosing

Wheel stop requirements and concrete wheel stop dimensions vary between countries. A standard size in one market may not be suitable in another. Below, we focus on the markets in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand both use the AS/NZS 2890.1:2004 standard. For wheel stops covered by this standard, the specified dimensions are 1650 ± 50 mm in length and 90–100 mm in height. Local authority and project requirements should still be checked before installation.

United States

The United States does not have one national rule requiring a fixed wheel stop length. A length of approximately 1830 mm, or 6 ft, is common for passenger-car parking spaces.

The ADA does not specify wheel stop length. Wheel stops can control vehicle overhangs and keep accessible routes clear. Always check state and local requirements.

Choose the Right Wheel Stop for Better Parking Safety

The right parking wheel stop dimensions depend on the vehicle type, parking layout, applicable parking standards and site conditions.

Before installation, check the full parking block dimensions, ground surface and distance from the wall. Correctly positioned wheel stops help drivers park consistently, reduce the risk of vehicle encroachment or contact, and maintain clearance from adjacent areas.
